Studying Tips

Since the school year has officially began for many of us, we thought it would be helpful to share a few studying tips to help you in your studies.

Do not study on your bed

Our brains associate our beds with sleep. If we begin to study on our beds you  may find yourself becoming to get really tired. Some may even fall asleep and work cannot get accomplished. Have a designated studying area so that you will be able to focus and not feel so tired while studying.

Remove all distractions

Unless you need your cell phone in order to complete your studies, remove yourself from any and all distractions. This includes being near TVs, cell phones, tablets, radios, other individuals that you know you will not be able to concentrate when around them. When studying you want to be in an environment that will let you concentrate on your task and increase retention.

Listen to classical music

If you are someone who does need a little background noise to study. Listening to classical music is beneficial while studying. Don’t listen to music in which a lot of speech in involved because that is when one may become distracted singing along to favorite songs.

Study in groups

In the future depending on what field anyone is interested in entering, there will be involvement of teamwork. Get to know people from classes and form study groups to help each other study. This is  a great way to study because it is input from several other people, and some of the information they share can be validation or new information you have not thought about previously to include into an answer.

Ways to De-stress

It is hard to think clearly in times of stress. Whether it be at school, work, or home environment it is important to remain calm.

Here are some ways to de-stress if you ever need to.

Practice Breathing Exercises

If you are ever in a moment f stress, just take 1 or 2 minutes to focus on your breath. Push worries and allow yourself to refocus.

Go for a walk

If time allows it, during a break go out for a small walk to help release some energy.

Pet a dog

Believe it or not petting animals (if you are not allergic) can be very beneficial. Petting our furry friends increase levels of Oxycontin!

Go out in Nature

On your next day off or free weekend go for a hike and spend some time in nature.

 

There are many other ways one can de-stress, but these were a few interesting ones to share.

Getting Ready for Back to School!

To celebrate going back to school, a thought occurred that it would be fun to interview a few workers around the office. Workers were asked how their families are preparing for back to school and if they are going on any last minute trips before school starts.

After asking all office workers and social workers many of them informed me that their children had gone to get hair cuts, bought new clothes, and school supply shopping. One coworker mentioned that a few of their families are trying to fit in one more vacation before school starts.

Over all, many of the youth are very excited to go back to school and wear their new clothes for school!

Book of the Month

An easy book to follow for younger readers I would recommend is the “Dear Dumb Diary” book series by Jim Benton. This book series was super funny and easy to follow.

They are short books and it would be fun to read together as a family!

Summer Fairs

Looking for something fun to do during the last few weeks of summer with your family? Head to the Orange County Fair! There are many activities to do at the fair. From petting animals, fun educational exhibits, fun rides, food and more! It’s a good opportunity to spend time together with family and have fun doing new things or watching shows that are available!

Earthquake Readiness

After the two strong earthquakes that recently hit. It’s important to review what one should do during an earthquake and what to have prepared.

During an Earthquake

Drop down and take cover. It is important to protect your head, neck, and torso.

If you are in a car. Pull over and stop the vehicle. Make sure to avoid over passes and bridges.

If you are on your bed stay there, curl up, and cover your head and neck.

If you are inside stay where you are and avoid anything that can fall over and windows. Exit the when the shaking stops.

If you are in an open area try and stay clear of building, trees, telephone/electrical lines.

If you are in the wilderness go to an open area and stay clear of cliffs and be weary for landslides.

If you are at the beach once the shaking stops get to high ground or go inland immediately.

After an Earthquake

Note that aftershocks will follow.

Check your gas and water lines.

Stay Calm, move to a safe area and monitor the news.

 

Have an emergency plan, emergency kit, and take preventative measures!!

Happy 4th of July!

Summer Meals

There are many children who depend on school meals. For many children the only time they were able to eat is at school. Please help children through the summer by donating money to organizations such as No kid Hungry or Feeding America.

No kid Hungry is offering Summer Meals. Parents can test “FOOD” to 877-877 to find free summer meals areas near them.
